N76 Review : I-Overview and Music Capabilities

Kirollos Fares | January 9, 2008

Nokia N76 Review
Overview:
The N76 is Nokia’s only Ultra Thin Device , 13.7 mm Thick , With dedicated music keys and an external screen , the N76 doesn’t look like most Nokias , with a very flat RAZR like keypad , MicroUSB Port , 2.4″ internal screen , a 2 Megapixel camera with LED flash , microSD port , and with the weirdest way ever of inserting SIM Cards ,There is a SIM Tray that that is slided all the way into the SIM Tray Slot , In English , it means that there’s a piece of metal that holds up your SIM card and is inserted in a slot in the back of the device , this is very inconvenient , when i first got the device , i spent 5 minutes figuring out how to insert the SIM Card , then i turned to the Get Started guide , which i normally never use when i buy a Nokia phone , anyway , this downside is temporary , as most people insert their SIM Cards once and never change it

The N76 comes in 2 colours : Red , Piano Black and someone spotted a white N76 in Finland , so i am not sure if there’s a white version of it .

I-Music Capabilities :

I’ve had this device since Sunday , i know you’re probably thinking that i haven’t tested the device enough , but frankly all i did in these 3 days is play music and test it’s capabilities , beside some camera shots of course , i transferred my Mini Library from the N95 to the N76 directly by connecting them both via USB , 700 MB , it took about 15 minutes , not bad for a Windows Vista laptop and USB to USB transfer .

what can i say about the N76 Music capabilities ? Marvelous , Awesome , PERFECT !
The N76 has the oldy Music application ,which is a bad thing for most people except me , the new one in the N95 8GB and the latest firmware version of the N95-1 is filled with bugs , lots of them scattered all over the application , the older version seems more stable , and normally don’t use my N95 for podcasts , i use my iPod and all i listen to is Andy Rooney ,
what makes this device special when it comes to Music playback is that the whole organized music library a.k.a the Music Application can be accessed from the external screen , hitting the |<< a.ka Left Cover Key will immediately open the music application , the volume keys are used to scroll round the library , the Middle key a.k.a Play key is used to select and the >>| key a.k.a right cover key is used for back , exit , you can navigate the library , select artists , play playlists all from the external screen which is very very convenient for me , and by far i call it the best function for the N76 , when playing a song , Spectrum like visualisation appears in the external screen which is kinda nice , though if i turned on one of the visualisations in the music application from the inner screen , it doesn’t appear in the outer one , not even Album art , a thing that requires a simple tweak , moving on to hardware , i love the headset port and it’s location in the upper part of the phone near the power key , the best location to put it ,i used my favourite headsets and connected it to the device , the voice wasn’t loud enough , and by enough i mean to the point where you feel you’ll turn deaf in 60 seconds , but was quite loud , when it comes to the loudspeaker , it is misplaced , it is located in the bottom of the device , where most people hold up their phones , the voice wasn’t that loud !! , at all , when i played music on both the N95 and the N76 , the N95 was soo loud that the N76 was literally unheard-able , the device is said to have stereo widening , but when i turned it on , nothing , and by nothing , i mean absolutely nothing changed to the music quality !! , but the overall sound quality of the loudspeakers is satisfying .

Overall , the N76 is the best Nokia phone for music , for me , navigating the music library from the external screen and not just shuffling music is very neat and the team who did this in Nokia deserves credit , one of my friends has the N93i and previously owned the N76 told me that the N76 is better than the N93i when it comes to music quality , and i can’t agree more .

Nseries WOM World » Blog Archive » New review of the N76 as a music player | January 9, 2008

[...] He’s a big fan of the N76 as a music player describing it as ‘awesome’ not least because it utilizes an older version of the music player than some of the latest handsets, which he has found to be less buggy. The external keys and screen are great to use, and of course, the music quality is as expected. [...]

Hello, I bought an N76 a week ago and I agree with everything you said about it’s music playing
capabilities. Much better than my nokia n810 tablet too. The only problem I have with it is when
you shuffle a whole album and it skips to the last song on the album, It will stop playing after
that last song ignoring the rest of the songs in the album.
And when you select shuffle and repeat at the same time, sometimes it repeats a same song
again more often than others in the album.

Great write Kirollos, my friend has an N76 and she also told me that the music capabilities of the device are great. I will be receiving an N81 and since both devices compare in having quick access music keys, I should compare both :D
