Well, the truth seems to be somewhere in the middle. When Imap enabled, the 5 or 15 or 30 minutes interval looks like the moment where the built in application connects to Gmail. But when the connection has been made, it seems it stays open for some time. Push mail is enabled during that time.

On my device, an E51, I noticed that when I set the interval to 5 or 15 minutes, my mail is pushed thrue all the time. When I set my interval to 30 minutes or more, the connection closes after some minutes.

When the connection is opened, no data or almost no data is used until a knew message arrives. It works with all Gmail maps. When I, for example, save a concept mail on my pc, in just 5 seconds it’s also in my concepts map on my phone.

Anyway, there is a great lack in the alerting system when you use Gmail imap with the build in client, so …. i don’t use it anymore myself.

This IS push email, the 5/15/30mins etc is not the time between checking for emails - for example set it to 30mins, send an email to yourself and you will get it straight away - not in 30 mins time.

These minute settings mean something else, but I don’t know what!

I would have to agree with Alan and say that this is not push email at all. In fact your nseries device and most other email compatible phones will do this out of the box with almost any email server POP3 or IMAP. If you want true push email i would suggest using emoze and gmail together or emoze and your desktop pc with POP3 setup.

It’s Push-like E-mail setting, as the receiving interval is less than or equal 5 minutes, then calling it Push E-mail is hardly an overstatement.

“auto-retrieval of e-mails every 5 minutes or so” isn’t push email at all. This is pull email. Push email does not require the client device to “poll” or check with the server for new email. The article claims that their description is push email as it uses the IMAP “idle” feature to maintain a connection to the server so that email notifications can be made. I would argue that this isn’t push email in a traditional sense as it does require this ongoing connection (which is unsuitable for any time based data plan). Also, the data required to maintain an idle connection is relevant as “a few hundred Kilobytes per day” can be considerable depending on your data plan.
