Why I Think Customizable Phones is the Future of the Industry

Kirollos Fares | January 9, 2009

customizableUpdate: Sorry again for the long blogging vacation :(

The cell phone industry hasn’t been around for more than 20 years, it was an unknown risky industry for most of it’s time, and it only started to profoundly grow during the last 90’s, through the years innovation captivated mobile phone manufacturers and the DNA of cell phones completely changed, it evolved from a bulky giant ugly box that is only used for emergency calls into an entertainment centre; Such develop helped close the gap between computers and phones, so it’s not surprising to me when Nokia calls it’s Nseries lineup multimedia computers, or when Nokia becomes the world’s largest computer manufacturer if we put the smartphone sales into consideration.

Which leaves many of us puzzled and confused, wondering about the technology’s next big hit, for me, the next big hit is manufacturers selling fully customizable phones, and I’m talking hardware here. PC Manufacturers took this step nearly a decade ago and now you can customize roughly any computer/laptop and order it online or by phone. That step will be imitated by the cell phone industry, in fact, it’s already been done by a Chinese phone manufacturer.

Just think about it, I can go to Nokia.com, decide to buy an N97, choose to ditch the GPS so it can reach my home safely with no troubles, increase RAM memory, choose an appropriate camera resolution, increase on-board memory and probably engrave my name on it’s back cover. This futuristic look of the process of purchasing cell phones is not a fantasy, the question is, when is it going to be deployed? 3 years, maybe. :D

All I’m hoping is that this giant step will be taken sooner, and that our favourite phone maker, Nokia, leads the industry in such act, and not foolishly wait for things to pace out, like it’s policy with touch-enabled devices. This step will increase sales, a thing Nokia deeply needs, and at the same time, Increase customer satisfaction, it’ll be easy for a person to change his phone without leaving an empty space in his pocket and without having unneeded functions on their device. It’ll also bring mobile personality from screen covers and housing to the core.
