Nokia N79: Entertainment Powerhouse in an Ugly front design

Kirollos Fares | August 28, 2008

Other newly announced device along the N85 is the N79, believed to be the upgrade of the not-so-old N78, The N79 supports a 5 Megapixel camera with dual LED Flash which is an upgrade of the 3.2 Megapixel one found in the N78, but other than that, nothing has changed a lot, except the design.

Other specs include GPS chip, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a smallish 2.4” screen with no OLED, the key lock introduced in the N81, a 3.5mm audio output jack, 3.5G HSDPA and though this phone was announced coincidently with the N85, it doesn’t support USB charging through the MicroUSB port “wouldn’t it be great if every Nokia design team get together and try to implement minor changes on each phone like the USB charging, because it’s weird not to see that implemented in the N79”.

Cheap N96 Alternative announced: Nokia N85

Kirollos Fares | August 27, 2008

In an event in London, Nokia announced the newest member in the Nseries family, the N85, at the first glance, this phone looks similar to the N81 “Typical”, and sports nearly the same specs of the Nseries devices i.e. The 5 Megapixel camera, GPS and WiFi, but with MAJOR changes when It comes to the Screen, Connectivity, USB Charging and Battery usage.

New stuff in this device include tri-band HSDPA (900/1900/2100), Something we’ve all been dying for which is USB Charging through the MicroUSB port and a newly introduced OLED 2.6” Screen that is supposed to bring better colour combinations and improve visibility and at the same time dramatically cut the battery usage of the 1200 mAH battery that has an average stand-by time of a whopping 363 hours, also the device comes with an 8GB MicroSD cart which is kinda nice and prevents the User’s memory hassles. Nokia Chat Unveiled

Kirollos Fares | July 10, 2008

Nokia Beta Labs unveiled the new instant messaging client called Nokia Chat  for S60 V3 phones that is not just like any other instant messaging client, it utilizes the built-in GPS receivers and allows an easier choice for consumers to share their location with specific friends or broadcast it to the whole group.

The idea is quiet innovative, though this is already supported by Nokia Maps where the location can be SMSed to anyone having a phone equipped with Nokia Maps.

Though this may seem to be it’s primary function, to share locations, It failed to locate myself during a trial chat with Abul from Adonisdemon.com, I tried to see the satellite status from GPS Data application and it located the exact position, but at the same time, the Nokia chat froze at “Getting Position”, A Huge downside for me, when it comes to instant messaging it does it’s job like any other instant messenger.

It Vibrates when you get an instant message, instead of producing noisy sounds, something that I really like, and it can be accessed directly from contacts application, Also, all the sinning-up is done from the application.

More Info and download links available at Beta Labs website.

A-GPS For N810

Kirollos Fares | June 27, 2008

Nokia Beta Labs just announced the brand new A-GPS beta application for the N810 that is is supposed to dramatically decrease the GPS lock time.

And as usual, because the project was just announced, the link is totally screwed up :P. so you might have to keep an eye on this URL as it’ll be updated in hours with the download link, and possibly some screenshots.

But it’s a good thing to see Nokia Beta Labs starting to develop applications for the Internet Tables, As far as I know this is the first Tablet-related project announced by the Beta Labs, and it looks like it’s a good start.

That’s all I’ve got now since as I said before the link is not working as the app was just announced, but I shall update this post with more details and screenshots once the website is up.

Updated: It seems that the link is now working, the application is only 4 KBs and requires an Internet Tablet with OS2008 Installed.

N78 Gets It’s First Update

Kirollos Fares | June 26, 2008

Start My new blogging season with this piece of news that I am really excited about, and waiting for Nokia to implement it for the rest of it’s cellphone collection.

The Newly released Nokia N78 got it’s first update, via OTA which stands for “Over The Air” meaning that the update is done directly from the cellphone, no need for the software updater client that is a total disaster and doesn’t work on many machines for absolutely no good reason.

And I know you’re proabably thinking, Updating will take a while since normally firmware updates are 100+ Mb, and downlading this amount of data leads to killing the battery and/or keeping you in debt for the rest if you’re life if you’re using a data connection and got no unlimited plan, well believe it or not the update is 2 Mbs only!! Oh Yeah, and directly from your phone, that means it’s the coolest thing ever.

Apparently Nokia has found a way to update only specific things on the firmware, without the need of reinstalling it all again, which is brilliant, and time-saving, On the other hand, it leaves me with security doubts, is this is safe? is someone’s phone gets hacked or receives an annoying virus, Is there a way to completely install the firmware other than resetting to factory settings that sometimes doesn’t help, We’ll have to wait and see.

More Info about this update available on Symbian-Guru .
